A Bit More About Nichols
Included here is a short documentary about Red Nichols, made around the same time as the fanciful bio-pic feature which debuted in 1959. You may notice that the documentary soundtrack doesn’t bother to always stay in sync with the band members playing, and even intersperses a different recording source for “Dixie” at one point. Close enough for jazz, as they say.
I also included a few excerpts from other movies where the band participated earlier in the decade. While a jazzed up version of “Three Blind Mice” and “Entrance of the Gladiators” may have fallen on friendly ears in the 1950s, I think they could have picked better choices to show off their jazz talents by leaving music for the big top to others.
Opening:
00:00 - 4:47 “Battle Hymn of the Republic”
Capitol Records Session:
4:47 - 7:55____“Blues At Midnight”
8:00 - 10:49___“Dixie” (with alt track interspersed)
Marineland Restaurant:
11:43 - 15:16___“Johnson Rag”
Quicksand:
15:30 - 19:18__(movie excerpt)
Wabash Avenue:
20:31 - 23:53___“Honey Man” dance accompaniment
Red Nichols and his Five Pennies Short (excerpts)
23:55 - 24:56__“Three Blind Mice”
24:57 - 27:07__“Entrance of the Gladiators”

1958 Bill Wood Mini Tribute
Переглядів 1625 років тому
Bill Wood was with Red Nichols from 1953 until Red passed in 1965. He was an excellent clarinet player and a great photographer. Both he and my father were instrumental for me getting into the photographic end of the movie business. He also spent much of his offtime documenting our family's comings and goings with his trusty Leica. I probably didn't notice how wonderful that was as a child. Did...

Lee Wiley was the ruination of several men, Bunny Berigan among them. Supposedly after their divorce, Jess Stacy commented, "They didn't burn all the witches at Salem." But, oh man, she could sing!

Wiley must have had serious mental problems, but Stacy was probably the only man in her life who was remotely capable of coping wth her. She tried to re-connect with Jess later on, but she had exhausted the patience of a patient man! But the music and the voice will endure..........

I have BW photos from 1930s that my dad said were of Joe Rushton. He is sporting a mustache and one shows him playing a clarinet; the other a xylophone. Looking at this video, I think it is the same man. My father played trumpet with Barney Richards and his band - originally from Chicago.

I was on board her as we steamed down and around the tip on our way to Norfolk / Newport News in 70. Became a Shellback on the way when we crossed on the Pacific side. Early out for me early November 70. I was an SK-3 on the commissary side of it. Made two deployments to Tonkin Gulf 68 & 69. Lots of good memories except the day of the fire. Lots of bad memories there. Anchors aweigh my brothers.

My family stayed at the Thunderbird Hotel for eight nights when I was ten years old in 1966. It looked a lot different by then; the big Thunderbird sign was gone, and a neon front that read THUNDERBIRD in huge letters was all I remember in front of the entrance. Years later, around 1990, I stayed at the El Rancho Hotel in Las Vegas, and I thought the pool looked familiar; I was told by an employee that the El Rancho was a remodeled version of the Thunderbird, but I thought it lacked all the charm of the old place.
